Stanhopea bueraremensis (?) - Orchid Board

This Stan I showed flowering last year as a "false guttulata" (It was sold as Stan guttulata, but has proved another Stan). After one year, it seems that my disappointment can turn into joy: some friends found a Stanhopea very similar to this in nature, and perhaps this is the seventh species (or natural hybrid) described for Brazil. I'll need to compare the flowers ('pickled') to confirm the ID. This Stanhopea is very vigorous, producing large flowers in relation to its size, but in small number by spike (two or three only). On the other hand, it produces many spikes, in sequence, one after another. The smell is not properly unpleasant, but definitely remember something synthetic (plastic or rubber)

That is gorgeous! What makes you say it is a different (new) species? How is it different than guttulata?

Hi Steve!

Surely it is not a Stan guttulata, the hipochile is completely different (look at my “Stan guttulata” thread in OB) and also the "perfume" is different (“Vicks VapoRub" in guttulata and "plastic" in the alleged buereramensis).
But I must say, I don’t know if it's in fact Stan bueraremensis (not yet published), only got the information that appears to be equal to bueraremensis, I’ll need to compare both!
I can say with certainty: there is even a new species (or natural hybrid?) described for Brazil, Stanhopea bueraremensis, which is in press for publication!

Wow, that would be really cool if you happened to the new species! You would be able to self the plant and probably make some good money doing it! Do you happen to know what publication (and when) the announcement of the new species will come in? I would love to read it.

The description of the new Stanhopea will be published in an upcoming edition of the “Coletânea de Orquídeas Brasileiras” - Collection of Brazilian Orchids, a Brazilian periodical. The journal has ISSN number and is published in a bilingual - Portuguese / English - at least in part - http://www.brasilorquideas.com.br/Publica%E7%F5es.htm

Magnificent flowers on that one, Mauro. And from your description of the numerous spikes coming off the "production line," the plant sounds like it's a flowering machine. Too bad about the scent--but at least you know that there's an insect somewhere in Brazil that must find the fragrance compelling. Congratulations on the blooms.
