Default Ctsm. Bela Vista's Sangria 'Jamie's Purple Passion' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. pileatum v.

I got this division from a friend last summer and wasn't expecting a bloom this spring. Anyway, the flowers were a day or so past their prime. However, I want to show how desiccated these can get without a problem. I let this soak in water yesterday so the spag can fully rehydrate. I'll post additional pics showing the bulbs fattening back up as it happens.

#Catasetum Bela Vista's Sangria 'Jamie's Purple Passion' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. #pileatum v. imperale 'SVO Blood Red' grown in #Austin #Texas. #Flowers are a day past prime and this plant needs water!! No more dormancy for this one. #nofilter #flowersofinstagra by Stephen Van Kampen-Lewis, on Flickr

Steve, those flowers are huge! What exactly is it? I don't recognize the abbreviation. I apologize for my ignorance.

I'm looking forward to seeing those pics of the fatter old bulb. Did you repot this plant earlier, or are you assuming the sphag is still in good shape?

Appreciate your pix as my 4 newbies from SVO look similar. I've started watering them well but do you suggest soaking instead? TY

I'm still using the same spag from last year.

lol This is probably an extreme example of what can happen with these guys. I think chopping it up last year and throwing a bloom spike shrank the bulbs quite a bit more than would normally happen.

I ran water through the pot for about 30 seconds. Getting completely dry spag wet after complete desiccation is tricky, so a soak could work well. Don't let it sit too long though and let the plant dry before next watering.
