I've noticed that with tabulare once a spike/growth initiates then new roots and root branching occurs.
See photo - white roots are new. There are more on other side.

I'm hoping that I can get a 2nd spike on my pileatum. It's bulb is maturing nicely and all leaves are green and healthy.

The third spike can easily be generated on last year's roots and bulbs with even minor root growth this season; hence my curiosity regarding what's going on "below the hood." I'm not saying this is for sure the case, but the possibility still remains.
