Gongora atropurpurea - flowering style? Female
Default Gongora atropurpurea - flowering style?

I have searched and squinted at photographs but I haven't been able to conclude the flowering style of this Gongora. I got mine from Ecuagenera in Sept. and, at the time, it was almost rootless. I stuck it in a regular 2'' AirCone pot with sphag to recover it. Now, it is sending off new growths (at least 3) and roots galore and I want to put it in a more permanent pot, and am considering S/H.

That said, how it flowers is obviously an important consideration in my little endeavor and I might have missed something, but I have been unable to find it's flowering habit. Does anyone own this? Does it send blooms down through the potting mix like Stanhopeas or does it send them out along the top of the potting media?

I ordered some kool-logs as well for some Masdies though none of the ones I got will accommodate this plant in a few years, maybe even one, though I could order a larger one...

Oh the options! Anyway, I appreciate any insight someone might give me on the flowering habit. TIA!

You probably already looked on IOSPE but it does say there:

"...that blooms in the summer on a 2 1/4' [37.5 cm] long, sharply pendulous, reddish, loosely many flowered racemose inflorescence...."

A long inflorescence plus the information "sharply pendulous" makes me think it might need a basket.

Unless somebody with real knowledge steps up, I would grow it in a basket at first, and see how it flowers. You might decide to repot into something else in the future.

Gongoras generally send their spikes out to the side before turning pendant.
