It is not welcome by most. Sorry
I don't know if you are aware but Fred ( not sure if its all hybrids ) gives naming rights to his hybrids to the first person to bloom the hybrid. So it doesn't matter what you think.
There is a phal. called Ugly Person.......and other hybrids with "stupid" and even worse.....like Pot. Psycho Bride. I suspect that some of these names are 'lost in translation' to English. Whatever the reason, its no reason to be disrespectful.

Being honest isn't being disrespectful.

Sigh. So this got out of hand quickly. I apologize to the Majestic Orchid Shopper group for any hurt feelings. At the time I posted I was unaware of the group and its name. I now understand where the hybrid got its name.

I will say though it kind of takes some of the fun out of growing an unnamed hybrid once you find out it has been named. Especially when you find out the name has been bought and not earned. Just my two cents.

OK, my 2-cents. Sticks and stones may break my bones....but names can never hurt me. Smile and get on with it. Life is much too short for...well, you know.

I would agree with you to an extent if that was that the case but exactly how was this name "bought and not earned " ? If this group was the first to bloom the hybrid, they got naming rights from Fred. It was "earned" as they competed against everyone who had purchased the hybrid.

Is there some truth you know that is not evident in the thread ?

Fred Clark "how can I say no after they bought 600 seedlings at full price" That group bought the right to name that seedling.

Well, they don't always seem to be able to read the calendar. My Catasetum Pileatum is sprouting now and the roots may be long enough in a couple of weeks that I can begin regular watering.

If somebody from that group bloomed it first that person had the right to name it.

If Fred bloomed it first he has the right to ask somebody else to name it.

If Fred sold the plants with the condition of sale that other buyers were transferring to Fred the right to name the cross, that is also not a problem.

If you have ever met Fred let me tell you he is a piece of work that guy... full of life, and jokes, and let me tell you becomes a hit one man show when he talks catasetinae! Would not surprise me that crazy names come along with his crosses, regardless of how they get them...

Haven't been too abreast with the group until a buddy and I went up to visit him and nursery... got one to try and hope for best, the closest to blooming of a group of the mini catasetums (forget the name and not home to check)... he said it may bloom this fall, but so far no buds forming...

looking forward to seeing all the blooms, avant!

Steven Hammer is an expert on the ice plants, Aizoaceae. In his scholarly works (Conophytum, Lithops) and species novae publications he often uses lots of humor. Stolid succulentists have complained openly about this. At least one made a fool of himself in a book review he wrote in a national succulent journal. Reminds me of the quote from the Mozart character in Amadeus: "...people so lofty they sound as if they ---- marble!"
