Repotting in mid-growth stage?
Default Repotting in mid-growth stage?

Hi, I purchased a Catamodes Black Magic last month. It was potted in spag moss in a black plastic pot. It has a backbulb and 1 new growth about 5 inches. I grow it outdoors.

So for the past week, we have been experiencing rainfall almost everyday with day temps about 34degC (about 90s F). Was told that they are heavy feeders and love rain.

However, today... i noticed that the potting media smelled "funky". Im not sure if i should repot it at this stage to charcoal in clay pots or leave it in the plastic pot. Would it stunt the growth?

They are about 2.5 inches. There are also old roots from the back bulb.

Here is a link to how to grow these. Some people would have waited to water until the roots were longer.

Yea, with roots only 2-2.5" long, I would've waited to water.

As for the smelly medium...I would definitely go ahead and repot. I repot most of mine every year in the spring, before they break dormancy and/or just as they are breaking dormancy and it seems to agree w/them. They certainly don't mind the repots.

thank you for the advice.

I've removed the spag moss. "phew" the smell!

I've cut away the rotten roots, dosed it with fungicide and left it to air dry. I've repotted it in charcoal.

And keep it out of the rain until those roots are longer!
