What a sight...love these and I'm trying my best at this recent attempt of mine.Got one to bloom last yr and spike came over edge of pot like yours. So waiting for that one and 2 others to show me I can do this! Is your plant on the small size? And is it in just fiber or bark mix or what? Great color and bloom. TY

I'd say this plant is small, this is the second summer ive had it, I bought a collection of 3 on ebay (along with Stan. Oculata & Platyceras)
The spike started down, but did not look like it was penetrating the medium and would not make it to the bottom, so I coaxed it over the side.
I have it in a mix of fir bark, shpagnum, & tree fern fiber. The net pot is lined with coco fiber.
I posted some previous pics here:
a couple of spikes

Its a peculiar smell, difficult to pin down.
But its kind of a spicy, musty, wood smell.

UPDATE:
Ok i pinned it down regrettably. I hate to say it but it smells like urine.

I would not say it is a good smell, but its not overpowering or pungent.
