Default Stanhopea in bark

Hello everyone,

I just un-potted my Stanhopea jenischiana, then i realized i didn't have any sphagnum moss left. Is it okay to pot a stanhopea in bark?

I'm willing to soak it daily but will it just not be moist enough in medium sized bark.

I have oculata which has thin, Oncidium type roots. I try to keep them evenly moist, just slightly drying between watering. AOS has a free care sheet for Stans on their website. Just search for AOS Care Sheet.

Most care sheets say spagnum moss but i don't have any left and i already un-potted my Stanhopea.

Today i potted it in bark because i didn't want to leave it bare root any longer.

I guess i will just have to see how things go.

Wish me luck!

It seems like bark will be fine, but it sounds like you will have to water almost every day, at least until the mix starts holding moisture.

From the AOS Stanhopea care sheet:

Potting is done best right after summer flowering, as most plants seem to grow year round. Plants that rest in the winter can be repotted in the spring. The best flowerings come from large clumps of plants, so large baskets are usually used. An airy, yet moist medium seems to work best, such as medium-grade fir bark (often mixed with sphagnum peat) or osmunda fiber. Vigorous plants may need repotting every three years or so.

I have one Stanhopea and when I got it the media was a bark mixture. When I repotted mine into a basket I used a Paphiopedilum orchid mix, so far the plant is doing great.

Great to hear!
I used medium grade bark and am soaking it daily for 15 or more minutes.
