Catasetum denticulatum
Default Catasetum denticulatum

Check out these two Ctsm denticulatum seedlings. The one on the left is cultivar 'SVO II' AM/AOS x 'SVO' AM/AOS. So far it looks amazing with 12 flowers and a second spike showing all on its first bloom. On the right is 'SVO II' AM/AOS x 'Dark Spots'. As you can see it is noticeably darker coloration and oddly a light yellow lip instead of the traditional yellow/orange but not as great a shape, and the flowers are fading. The 2nd picture is the same plant earlier in its flower life. I have a 3rd plant of another cross, Ctsm denticulatum 'SVO' AM/AOS x 'Dark Spots' which is also in spike so we'll see soon how it looks. I'm currently growing these in an open area of my basement under a 600w HPS light with a dehumidifier running constantly. I keep humidity around 40-45 percent. Despite SVO's listing that you need 70 percent they are doing great with healthy plump bulbs. I am going to move them into the greenhouse for their rest period where 65-70 is the average humidity just in case.

This is my favorite Catasetum species!! Yours look great! Too bad I've murdered every single denticulatum I've ever tried to grow. These are tough to get right.

denticulatum is a cool species. I don't have one. How is the culture different Steve? When do you kill it?

I killed them when I was growing everything (including several dozen Catasetinae) outside in Hawaii!! To this day, I still have no idea what I did wrong. Stephen Moffitt told me he has the same problem with them. He also have no idea why he can't grow them and he has hundreds of Catasetinae.

Hmmm. I thought Stephen had some in his catalong but they were all hybrids.
Steve, when you were in Hawaii did you give them a rest or did they go dorment on their own? I don't thin H&R does.

If I remember correctly, they went dormant on their own and never came back to life. Roy used to tell me he never rested any of their Catasetinae. I ended up chatting with Gene Monnier (who secretly retired to a farm on the Big Island) who told me that if your night temps stay above 55 degrees, there's no need to rest any of the Catasetinae. Since H&R doesn't really drop below 55, Roy can water his Catasetinae all year long with no ill effects.

Here is the last of the crosses with cultivar 'Dark Spot's.
Ctsm denticulatum 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm denticulatum 'Dark Spots'. I purchased two additional 'SVO II' AM x 'SVO' AM plants based on the nice quality of the first plant. One of those is in spike already. Enjoy
