Default Catasetum Kiki...

Two Catasetums followed me home the other day. Both had been through a rough life thus far.

My Ctsm Frilly Dorris has a big kiki growing out of the pot. It hangs there like a broken arm.

Is it ok to take it off and pot it now? Worried about it getting bumped off or damaged.

Doesn't look to be a keiki...it's just a new growth that has grown out of the pot. As for whether or not it is safe...probably? I hear these do okay with one back bulb, but have not made any divisions of mine yet. Frilly Doris...one of my wants. Lucky you and I hope they grow well for you.

Thanks Reliablefool,

Hadn't thought about it being a new growth growing out of the pot. She's in a three inch plastic pot inside the clay pot. Has eight pbulbs and three are leafed out with spikes. Makes sense that it could get crowded out.

Think I'll rig something up for the wayward pbulb so it's more stable and secure, then repot with the others in the spring.

Doris is doing great. (Maybe they like being underpotted?) Will post pics when she blooms.

With that many pulbs including 3 others active I don't think there'd be any harm in splitting this one off. Would give you a spare in case the main plant got a bad rot or to trade/sell. If you are worried look for active root growth: if it's got roots growing it will be fine I think.

There are two pbulbs hanging out. The anchor one is shriveled but has healthy roots going into the pot and about three good roots outside the pot. Going to leave this pbulb as is. I don't want to mess with the good mojo going on in the pot.

The pbulb with the leaves, has white roots that plump up and turn green when I mist them. Thinking on getting the roots a little healthier by wrapping them in a kind of spag and bag before splitting it off.

I'd split this one off. Spag n bag is not good for plants unless they have no roots. Considering those roots are relatively big, just throw it in a pot of its own. You need to do it now, before the roots get too big and die when repotted.

Default Ctsm L. Doris Jr. Birth Announcement...

Arrived around 7:04 pm, it was an easy delivery. Three twists and she was off the Mother Plant.

Honestly don't know if she is a keike or a wayward pbulb. All that matters is the mother plant has an awkward appendage off and hoping Jr. will thrive. Fingers crossed...

Thank you all for your help and support.

Ps, Jr's nickname is Corn Stock...
