Coeliopsis hyacinthosma
A monotypic genus of Stanhopeinae, distributed between Panama and Ecuador. I saw my first Coeliopsis flowers on a veranda when visiting orchid lovers in a suburb of Medellin decades ago. Then never again. From the aspect of the dried flower stem, the plant aspect and the bulbs I believe that I've seen a plant in nature at the edge of the crater of extinct Maderas volcano in Nicaragua close to the southern border, at 1200 meters in dense wet to humid forest. But so far Coeliopsis is only listed for Panama, not Nicaragua.
Anyway, plants are not rare here in nurseries and are not difficult to grow. But it took me many years to get a division of my plant flowered, high up on a bench under bright light .
For long I was fascinated by the name and the tantalising perfume, which is exactly the same as Stanhopea grandiflora. Flowers seem to last at least ten days, eventually longer.
