[QUOTE=jcec1;773112]Is there any cultural difference between this and warscewiczii? I was assuming a dry winter rest?[COLOR="Silver"]

Both species undergo a winter rest, but there is no difference in the rest behaviour between the two species.

My plant is showing no signs of going into dormancy, the leaves are still green and no sign of yellowing, there is also a second spike developing. It is in normal room temperatures. Should I withhold water to force it into dormancy or just let it do it's own thing?

Two of the seedling Catasetum I bought from Fred Clarke at SVO in the past year have just begun spiking, though I had already decided to stop watering. One has a full crown of leaves and one has one leaf left on the plant. My growing area is probably warmer than yours.

I wrote to Fred asking what to do now that they are spiking. His main concern was whether they have leaves or not, and mine still do. He said to water again lightly, then let them go completely dry between waterings. As the leaves yellow, withhold water completely until new growth in spring. He said I might have to water twice more this fall.

Thanks for the information. I haven't been letting mine dry between watering as it was still looking green and healthy. I was thinking the decrease in temperature and light may have triggered dormancy. I will start watering less frequently.

He spoke to our club a year ago. Where they're from the temperature is pretty much constant all year, but it only rains in the summer. Humidity goes lower in the dry season. So lack of water triggers dormancy.

Thumbs up

I bought one of these about 18 years ago at a local orchid show, when I was a kid just getting into orchids . The name sounded so exotic and the basic care was explained to me, but I did not have the knowledge or the patience at the time to keep it alive for more than a couple months. I didn't get the whole dormancy thing. Same with Pleione praecox.

There were plants being offered at a show here back in January but I just couldn't bring myself to pay $35 for a small, single growth plant. I would like to try a few Catasetinae at some point, and when I do this species is what I will start with.

A true gem! Very gracefull form. I think you've gotten the hang of the Genus.
