SVO 5911 Clo. Jem's Speckled Russ 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'Golden Fire'
Having just received this orchid from SVO I looked back at the description. It says if should flower a few times per year. I am wondering if this involves several dormant periods per year or keeping the plant in constant growth ? If this has been covered please direct me to the thread.
Thank You
Steve
Just the one dormant period but the plant will produce spikes at various times throughout the growing season.
I don't grow this one but what you might see is a spike early in the growing season and then one or two more at later times. I have a couple that bloom on and off from early summer until just before they go completely dormant.
BTW . you can leave the SVO 5911 off the front of the name...that is just the way Fred numbers his orchids for sale.
I agree. My big catasetums usually bloom when the new growth is getting started, then randomly a couple times more while bulb is gaining mass. Most other catasetinae bloom just before or after (or both) going dormant. Some of mine have two spikes at the moment. Occasionally I'll cut the 2nd and following spikes before they mature to save the plant's energy for growth. Strange, I know. But it pays dividends next year!
