Growth vs. spike for this Mormodia....?

I grow under lights, so I suspect this plant could just be confused as to the date. I don't plan to force into winter rest, so it may just continue growing around the season. I guess it might be a spike, but it looks more like a growth to me - and the plant is young (only the one large bulb, one tiny back bulb)

Its a new growth. Water and fertilizer can resume as soon as the growth is at least three inches in length and forms roots. You have at least to give it proper rest for the growth to form flowers in the future or you will just be getting new growths with no flowers.
A spike would look like a tiny lollipop.

Well, sure. But the leaves of the original growth are still on, and I have been watering and fertilizing (I was considering stopping 1/1, but won't now.)

It could be a spike...it's too early to tell for sure. Timing is right for a spike. Give it a bit more time and you'll have a definite answer. I wouldn't make any major changes in what you're doing until you know what's happening there.

I have a number of Ctsm (cyc, cycd, morm, ctsm, cl, etc) and they are in a wide range of phases. Some have lost their leaves and are well on their way into dormancy...some haven't even begun to turn yellow. Some are spiking...some are done for the season...some are in full bloom. It runs the gamut and w/this group you will find that most are not quite as consistent as some other orchids in what they do and when they do it. Except for the fact that most will go dormant at some point during the winter.

If it turns out to be a new growth then just continue to do what you're doing but be careful to not get water down in the new growth. When I have young ones that aren't going dormant (I don't force the young ones) then I"m careful to water around the edges of the pot because the young growths are prone to rotting off if water gets trapped down in those new leaves.

Hang in there...you'll have a better idea of what's going on w/your plant shortly.

I actually agree with both Katrina and Bud: Its a bit too early to be completely sure, but my guess is that its a new growth. Take another picture in about a week and we'll know for sure by then.

Normally Mormodia spikes emerge from higher internodes. I guess it will turn out to become a new growth. However the rest period is not completed now.

Hmmmm.... it looks like a bloom? a blooming growth?

Thanks for the update. It is not uncommen that in the beginning the base of a spike develops a small bulb and eventually roots, but later the vegetative growth is stopped and the generative growth (=flower) is formed.
