Default Great pics!

Thanks for those great pics! I am new to orchid growing and just bought a Stanhopea indora x nigroviolacea(can see why you sorten the names!) It's just a little guy(hopefully you can see the pic, remember I'm new to this) and since I live in a very cold climate he didn't look so good when i got him home so hope i don't loose him. Any special way to look after this type???

I'm really no expert on Stans but i do know they like low light. The grower i got the stan nigro from had all his in almost full shade. Is that frost damage or sun damage on your leaves? I lost half a leaf of my Stan embreei to sun damage. It hasn't hurt it that bad, there's new growths coming through now.

The other thing is to put it in a hanging basket with paper bark or something weak around the sides so the flowers can burst through the bottom. If they're in a pot the flowers will die at the bottom.

Ummm... what else. The grower i got mine from grows his in 3:1 perlite to coco coir.

But yeah maybe someone else here knows more about Stans.

Well it's not sun damage that's for sure! It was in my car for about 4 hours. Temp outside being about zero. Maybe my light is too strong.

Very nice, can I ask how old these plants are? I recently got my first Stan nigrrov, and have been doing a little research. and this is the first place that I have found that people are actively growing these. Keep up the good work. Any advice on Growing would be appreciated.

flacajun.

Why don't hybridizers try for some stanhopea blossoms that last a week? Now *that* would be something!
Still, they are spectacular! That nigroviolacea (which used to be wardii var. nigroviolacea pre-taxonomists) is just dazzling! A beauty!

I'm not sure how old my plant is flacajun, i heard though they take like 6 years to flower or something, which is possibly why not many people hybridize them... I've looked at getting a flask, but decided not to for the same reason.

Since then i've bought another 3 smaller plants or offcuts from another grower, and they're only a year or two off flowering so that seems like a better way to get these guys..

Pretty sure that's the first time I've every heard stanhopea blossoms referred to as "cute". Bizarre, impressive, striking, magnificent, dazzling, spectacular - but cute?

Well grown

I have two Stans in wire baskets that I haven't been able to bloom.
