As above stated this is my new cat. Frilly doris. I ordered it from shermanpt(?) On ebay. It came earlier then expected!!! Is in great shape and I am hoping what I am seeing is a possible new spike!!

This was developed by Fred Clarke of SVO named after the wife or the daughter, it escapes me now....this blooms 3 times a year ....no need to check the roots if you got it from David of Shermans via Ebay....he is a very reliable grower.

Nice plant! Its a little early to tell, but I'm thinking new growth rather than spike. To my eyes, its not quite pointy enough to be flowers.

O well I always do a soak for a 20-30 min when I first get them since they usually have to ride around in a hot box 4 2-3 days to get to me. There were some soggy roots but like you said nothing to fear and I put it in a holy clay pot because it was actually to big for my net pots...

What are the rules for these when they first start to spike?

It looks like the plant is still in an active growth mode, so I'd just water it as usual. If it were a spike and not a new growth, you could probably start reducing your fertilizer schedule in a few weeks.

If it turns out to be a new growth, I'd keep it warm and treat it like its summer!

Okay. My other black magic is in spike and slowly losing all leaves. So this was interesting to see.

They are here on thursday so we shall see. I have several picky petunias that I grow year round that are not orchids. So I am very much a pro at the dang things. My gardenia started out at about a 1lb and in 3 yrs has grown over 22 inches around and 15 inches high and now weighs close to thirty in its pot. I usually grow it during winter and one of those blooms makes my entire house smell. Whew. And that plant is as picky if not worse than an orchid. Yeesh!

I agree. If you can grow a gardenia well, you can grow just about anything !
