Default Stanhopea inodora alba ( now ruckeri )

This is one of my favorite stanhopeas. It has a very light fragrance somewhat like a lily.

Wow I like this white form. I bought a Stanhopea tigrina this last summer. Flowers don't last long but the fragrance is intoxicating. Had to leave it outside because the scent was too heady.
How cool do you grow this in the winter?

Andrew

I'm in Michigan and don't have a greenhouse. I grow about 200 or so stanhopeas in a 10'X10' room with a hydrofoger for humidity. They are on light racks with flouresent lights. The winter temps. range from 50/55 degrees to 70 degrees when the lights are on. The humidity is about 80%. I grow in wood and plastic baskets with an open mix of bark, corse pearlite hydroton beads, and what ever else I can get my hands on. I never grow with sphagnum moss in wooden bakets only in some of the plasic baskets.
What ever works depending on that plant. They very on there needs depending on where they come from.

From mid May to mid October the all hang in trees outside.

WOW! I love your set-up....
you must list your plants on your bio so we will know what you have in your collection....looking at the pictures of your plants makes it very interesting

Hi Andrew - it looks like you live in L.A. If you live in areas with some coastal influence, within 15 miles or so of the coast, you can grow several species of Stanhopea outside. This includes S. tigrina and S. ruckeri (inodora). My average night temperatures in winter are typical of s. California 47F. There are about a dozen or so species of Stanhopea that are more tropical in their requirements and don't like our cool winters. However, as Gwallogwyn said, they all appreciate spending time outdoors in shade during the summer.

Didn't realize you are in SD! I used to live there. All my cool growers used to love it. But the heat lovers suffered!
