I'm new to catasetums, is this a new growth or a spike? Or is it too early to tell. Thanks for your help.

Looks like a spike to me. Spikes tend to be pretty rounded on top and new growths are usually very pointed.

agreed with what Steve just said, sometimes it is easier to tell whether it is a spike or a growth from side views. however time will tell, can't wait to see the bloom. it a beautiful catasetum!

well, definitely looks like a spike to me, with the elongated neck and maintaining the rounded tip as Steve suggested, i am betting all my money on a spike.
i am no so good with words so i just shot a few pics this morning, the first three is a pic of a start of new growth (here you can really see the pointed tip) and the latter two is spike (especially the fourth pic, the tip is rounded with a long narrow neck, characteristic of a spike) and the last pic is to show remnant of a spike with a pseudobulb like structure.
i included the last pic here because sometimes i find it hard to differentiate at early stage when these vigorous spike emerges, the have roots on their own and they are very fat at the base, mimicking a growth, but as they grow, the elongated neck with rounded tip is maintain, and eventually the spike forms.
in fact, in time all the answer will reveal, don't they?

Brenda- How big is your Catasetum? I received a very small seedling but yours doesn't seem that much bigger than mine. I'm trying to figure out how big this one will be and how long it will be until it first flowers.

Hi mollie, mine went totally south and has gone to orchid heaven.....thanks for reminding me. Not sure what happened....but just curled up and died on me. I only had it a couple of months from an auction we had at our club.

I'm sure you'll have better luck. I have other catasetums that I'm trying, hopefully with better results....these were bought through Sun Valley Orchids....so a good start
