This one's more yellow this year than last. It's a cheerful yellow ! #5 through 9 is second spike opened 2/10/12 !

Yeah, that's the catch with breeding with Catasetums, you usually get one gender at a time. Male flowers are supposedly more common than female flowers, and from what I have heard, more extreme conditions are needed to cause female flowers. I wish there was a surefire way to get a gender you want.

Actually, a lot of really big, mature plants will only throw female flowers. I have that problem with a Cat tenebrosum, so I'm gonna chop the bejezzez out of it this summer!

well... the problem is teh interpretation given to it nowadays... originally it had no painted eggs, and had nothing to do with christ at all... it was a pagan tradition that the catholic church arbitrarily incorporated (moving Christ death and resurrection again to match with the spring celebration)... same as the Christmass tree and Jesus birth...
