Mystery orchid #2 is Gongora galeata, '1 does look more like a Stanhopea rather than a Dendrochilum. It does have fairly small and narrow leaves for a Stanhopea, so maybe it is a Sievekingia. But it's impossible to tell without a flower.

#1 definitely looks more like Sievekingia than it does Stanhopea. However, are those spike remnants or old leaf bases coming from the top of some pseudobulbs? Don't all species in this subtribe bloom from the base of the pseudobulb? If so, and if those are old spikes, that would point to this being Dendrochilum or something else not in the Stanhopeinae.

weederwoman - I agree that the one is Gongora galeata and the other is a Dendrochilum species, if you look at the new growths you will see the telltale bracts enclosing the new growth. Here is a link to a picture of Dendrochilum magnum showing again what I am talking about :

Thank you all for your help. I am pretty sure the stalks on top of the pseudobulbs are cut off leaf stalks. This orchid was sick enough I doubt if it flowered in the past couple of years and most of the stalks are still quite green.

You are right: I didn't notice the bracts. Well spotted.

I think you nailed it, Glen, those sheathing bracts are really distinctive.

Thank you all. Half of me is glad I have a dendrochilum, and half is sad I don't have a stanhopea. Guess I will just have to get me one.
