I purchased this as a seedling in 1998 from Venger Orchids in Colorado. It bloomed each summer up until two years ago. Two years in a row, slugs got to the spikes. I've learned my lesson this year and here is one spike. The second one is forming now.
The flowers smell like anise. I'm not too fond of licorice, but I like this fragrance.
The name of your plant is Clowesetum Black Jade. Is is a cross between Clowesia russelliana (it used to be Catasetum and thus the old name for your hybrid) and Catasetum expansum. It can be notice that it is a hybrid of Clowesia by the lip. The scent, that I find wonderful, is also a characteristic of Clowesia.
Beautiful flowers--and a licorice-like smell sounds like it would be very nice, actually. If you get bored with it, Kevin, you're more than welcome to ship a piece of it down here to Indiana.
