What kind of Stanhopea do I have? - Orchid Board

Found this pretty little thing at a local nursery. Unfortunately no labels. They just opened up this morning and boy did they open fast! They look like jenischiana but can't be sure..

What you have appears to be a very overgrown, in need of thinning out, Stanhopea jenischiana.

I agree with Arenal, the profile seems correct but other shots show a chunkier flower.

I also agree: the profil elook slike jenischiana, the other shots dont look right. On the other hand the front of the lip looks correct in all the shots. When did you take the shots: whyen the flower just opened or when it has been open for a day?

If the latter: Maybe a hybrid? Almost looks as if there was an influence like candida or tigrina.

The trouble with these things is the 40 or so years of hybridisation, which still continues to this day. It's starting to get to the stage where unless a plant is wild sourced, or has a known provenance, you can forget true species ID from cultivated sources. Throw in crosses between species of a group (eg. oculata complex) & the picture is further complicated. Fragrance analysis is probably the most useful tool.

Thanx for your most insightful comment. That's my exact same take on them, so I never buy hybrid stanhopeas.

I saw that this was inevitable over 15 years ago and was disinclined to include any hybrids in my collection.

At least with nothing but species Stanhopeas in the collection a lost-label plant can be ID-ed.
