Am I remembering incorrectly? I didn't think that the catasetinae plants were single-gendered, but could grow either male or female flowers, depending upon the culture - mostly light intensity.

yeap, the female and male plant are from different plants, but i had come across photos in the internet where one spike with two sexes of ctsm flowers, on PB with two spikes one male and one female. and occasionally came across pics of hermaphrodite catasetum flowers.
as i was reading trough my initial post, i may need to clarify a something here, the male ctsm Chong Keng Yong pic is inserted for viewing only, the male flower i mention that is blooming together is actually another ctsm, catasetum integerrimum which i had just pollinated both of them

Ray,
Harry (catwalker808) gives a very eloquent (as usual ) explanation of this very topic on page 3 of this thread: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...enebrosum.html Mark15 also discusses the topic further down the page. Not to high jack this thread, but you might find it interesting.
