Roly, the SIMPLEST solution to the problem is to use a WIRE basket. You won't need to "think". The flower spikes will "think" for you!
I am currently waiting on flower spike #2 of 3 of
Stanhopea tigrina nigroviolacea 'Predator' FCC/AOS. This is one humdinger of an orchid when those flowers are fully open! WoW!!
#2 of 3. Apparently, this plant won't flower all 3 simultaneously. It would probably overdose on all of the activity!
People lament at how short the Stanhopea flowers last.
WELL, if you have three spikes opening sequentially, the flowering time is extended.
