Stanhopea Nirvana
This is my favorite stanhopea. It is a hybrid between Stan. posadae and Stan.martiana. The inflorescence usually consist of 5 flowers. The fragrance is not all that geat having a camphorous quality. When it is in bloom during the warm months the background color is almost white, during cooler months it is an ivory color.
I have Stan. martiana but have only managed to get it to bloom once in ten years. Nirvana is easy to flower and never fails to do so. This plant has one more spike coming for next month.

Very cool! One of the few Stan hybrids (IMO) that improves on the parents and is nice to see that it imparts the hybrid vigor to the offspring. Where did you get this one?

I got this as a 6" seedling in a 2.25" pot from Doug Pulley in October of 2001. I think this is one of his best hybrids.

That's a beautiful group of flowers. Too bad that this hybrid didn't inherit Stan. martiana's scent, which is rather nice. Do you allow your plant to go through a cool, dry winter dormancy (like martiana benefits from), or do you maintain the same growing conditions throughout the year? Congratulations on the beautiful blooms.

Steve
All my stanhopeas are grown under lights during the winter. I keep the tems. at night at 55* and during the day the tems rise to about 75* because of the ballasts on the floresent lights. Stan. Nirvana continues to grow year around. I do reduce watering Stan. martiana because it is dormant untill about the begining of May. It is a plant I got when Ray McCullough's collection was being broken up after his death. I'm not shure if it is the awarded cultavar 'Oaxaca'.

Here are photos of the second spike's flowers in bloom today. They show more of the coloration of Stan. posada than the previous flowers.
