Question Coryanthes repotting question

Hi ya! I just received, last week, 2 new coryanthes. One is a Coryanthes Trifoliata and the other is a Coryanthes Leferenzianum! The Leferenzianum is in spike so im not going to repot it.They both came in 3-3 1/2inch pots.I was wondering what medium to use due to their special needs.Because of their relationship with those ants!(ive done as much research as I can)I have baskets now for them to go into as it is my understanding that they like that better then a pot.Any help on the medium would be GREATLY appreciated!

For a perfect flowering, a Coryanthes plant must
(a) produce several large / complex flowers,
(b) produce for 4 hours per day a heavy fragrance,
(c) constantly discharge water drops to fill the Epichile of each flower ...

All this is extremely energy-sapping, and some plants die in the process.
Hence the grower has to support the plant by providing the best compost, enough light(!!) and sufficient fertiliser.
Note :: fertiliser 10-50-10 to support the development of one or more spikes,
...........fertiliser 35-10-10 to support the development of one or more leaf shoots.

Hello SpeciesNut.

I suggest that you fertilise your spike with 10-50-10 / 150 ppm per day,
otherwise it could starve and you could lose it ...

Also, you might want to consider what was recommended on these pages previously,
see thread "Understanding Coryanthes" ...

Regards,
Manfred

Hi SpeciesNut.

Compost :: "large size bark" is not ideal but would be just acceptable for Coryanthes plants with leaves 20 inches long (large plants), if the stuff were fresh. If not fresh, consider exchanging it with best-quality Sphagnum.

If one of my plants puts out a spike, and I would find the compost not ideal because I have delayed re-potting (error),
I will change the compost immediately to save the plant. The plant responds with visibly increased vigor ...

By the way, Coryanthes plants grow well in plastic pots ...

Regards
Manfred.
