I received this beautifull mormodes as a gift last year and it was tagged as a dark buccinator, but indeed is very different of the buccinators I already have, actually is another specie which I do not know. It is really spectacular it has a very dark burgundy color with a strong tutti frutti scent, so strong that floods the whole room in which I have it now. I found a specie named as Paraensi in the web that looks very much alike, but I am not totally convinced.

Bruno, it can be Mormodes paraensis. I thought about it directly. When it still in bloom you can compare with mine. I think they are quite alike, take a look.

Thanks again Gena, but as I mentioned before I still have my doubts, because I think this plant was collected in Venezuela and as far as I know by a relative of Henrique Graf the owner of the Plantio La Orquidea nursery. Also I notice that mine shows a very compacted cluster of flowers and yours apparently does not display such behaviour. But in any way I have to admit that they look very much alike.

Oh, than we are in trouble .... I didn't know that plant was collected in Venezuela. Mormodes paraensis is Brazilian species from State of Pará, its species name refers to it.
Bruno, may be you can contact Dr. G. A. Salazar for help with ID of this species?

Bruno,
That dark red must be quite a sight in real life! Congrats on that acquisition. Mystery plants can be a lot of fun!

oops... seeing this thread after giving my comments in Flickr... I also thought of Mormodes paraensis, but if it was collected in Venezuela, hhhmmm....

Bruno, do you have a list of all Mormodes species recorded for Venezuela?

nevertheless, a great plant!

Ramon I guess nobody has it. I only have the illustrated field guide of Dunsterville and Garay in which they reported five different species in Venezuela. The point is I do not have any description of these species only the illustrations. It could be the one under the name of amazonicum, but this one was not collected so far away.

Yes Gena I think is a good option.
