Is it recommended that Catasetum be taken out of the medium and left, bare rooted until new growth begins in Spring? That's what I did last year and I also didn't get any blooms this year! Leave it dry in the medium or naked?

I leave mine in the pot. It just seems like a waste to constantly be throwing out year old media. If you do take yours out, remember to keep them shaded! I took mine out one year and the sun burnt the roots which lead to some sort of rot/infection that started at the base of the bulbs and moved up to top. It nearly killed a lot of my collection. That was the 'experiment' I tried a couple of years ago with disastrous results..

Thanks for the response! Especially Ramon and Jan but thanks everyone! I have work to do now but i will go and read through the lists in meticulous detail and maybe contact Fred Clark and/or Jumbo and see if i can import some flasks.. I already had a look and there aren't many plants available from this group here in Aus.

That is a big mistake. I also red that kind of reccomendation in some web pages. Yo should keep it in the pot until the media is in bad conditions which ussualy last a few years (3 to 4 or even more). The plant must be repotted always in the resting period and be very carefull with the roots.

Thanks Bruno. I had mine in sphag this year and wanted to change it but wasn't sure about when to do it. If I understand correctly, I can re-pot mine when all the leaves have fallen, before it goes into winter rest? All 3 leaves left are yellowing now and was going to remove the sphag. then but if it's recommended to replace the medium during the rest period, that changes my plans for this one.

This group of orchids does not share the same culture requirements as Cymbidiums. Most of them are warm to hot growing and that is the opposite of Cymbidiums. I have attached an article that I composed regarding this very interesting group of orchids. The easiest to grow and flower would be any of the group crossed with Catasetums.
