Default Cycnoches pentadactylon

Cycnoches pentadactylon is in bloom at the moment. The plant is still very young and this season it flowers for the first time with male flowers. Last year it flowered for the very first time in its life with a single female flower.
The flowers are beautifully fragrant with some kind of sweet and slightly spiced aroma.
This particular plant is from Brazil.

This is such a great species and I don't know why it's not in my collection yet. I'm surprised that this little guy's first bloom was with a female flower. Usually you get males for the first couple of years. You must grow them really bright!! Whatever you're doing, it's something that really seems to work!

I have same opinion as Steve, very unusual for any catasetinae plant to have during its first bloom female flowers. This specimen is very attractive.

Who said that mine behave themselves like well-behaved plants? I’m trying to ignore all theirs escapades!

Awesome, as usual, Gena. And I agree, what's the fun in a well behaved plant?

I was just discussing this with an orchid friend yesterday. The male/female flower thing in Cycnoches et al has never really made sense to us. After all, isn't that part of the orchid definition -- combined male & female flower parts? Beautiful flowers of course, no matter their sex. My Cyc. Chloroge is just now opening 2 spikes of female flowers, but my Cyc. barthiorium has struggled since last year, so I'm happy even to get leaves this year!
