The remarkable characteristic of Mormodes species is the 90 degrees twisted column. This torsion positions the stigma laterally in relation to the lip. Sometimes I think that orchids like to play with their pollinators, so variable are these mechanisms!
This species is native to the Amazonian region, more precisely to the Brazilian State of Rondonia, which happens to be one of the most deforested of that region, an ongoing process that seems will end only when there are no more trees to be cut. The species has been described as recently as 1989 and I don't even like to think of the many still unknown species we are loosing to the chain saws!
