Ctsm. tenebrosum - Orchid Board

This is a selfing of Ctsm. tenebrosum 'St. Francis'. The male flowers are very pleasing to the eyes with their avocado green petals and lip. The dorsal and lateral sepals are dark brown, almost black. The flowers are very firm. The natural spread of the flowers are 1-3/4 inches horizontal and 1-3/4 inches vertical.

This is an amazing looking plant. Now I really want one, but I can't find one anywhere online. Sooo cool.

That is one of the better looking tenebrosums I have seen. The shape is really nice and wide. Is yours just starting to grow now? Or is this the second growth for the year?

This is a back bulb that is blooming. According to my notes on the label, I cut and removed this back bulb from the front bulb of the plant and replanted it on 4/16/09. There is a new shoot coming out but it looks stunted. I think all the energy is going to the flowers. I'm now looking for the front bulb. It's in my collection somewhere.

Those are beautiful blooms. Hopefully you'll be successful in finding the front-bulb division if this one's expending all of its energy on flowering. Is it normal for tenebrosum to flower at this time of year? I don't grow it, but I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that all of the catasetum species and their relatives (like Cycnoches warscewiczii, which I do grow) should be in growth mode during the summer. I might have to try and see if I can find one of these somewhere. Thank you for sharing the inspiring pics.
