Dear Pat, 100% sure that you have (if it is your plant) a very nice specimen of Catasetum pileatum var. imperiale (depending on the source you will also see it listed as Catasetum imperiale - name accepted by RHS)
This is my favorite orchid and I know it very well. It comes from Venezuela and is supposed to be extinct in the wild... Actually, it used to grow in a very tiny spot in south-west Venezuela (and I am sure you can still find it there
)
There is a lot of discussion about this plant, because RHS and some taxonomist recognize it as a separate species, others as a variety of Ctsm. pileatum, and if we want to be very rigourous, it should be recognized as an extrem of the Ctsm. Xtapirices (natural hybrid between Ctsm. pileatum and Ctsm. macrocarpum) Nowadays, almost everybody has agreed that the red colour comes from inflitration of macrocarpum genes into pileatum... Note: Ctsm. Xtapiriceps is a quite complex group with plants almost identical to macrocarpum and plants almost identical to pileatum, and everything in between...
