Hi Nokomis,
Yes, the spikes get through newspaper on it's own! Newspaper is hard enough to suport medium and soft enough to allow the penetration of spikes!

Hi Bill,
Two layers are enough; newspaper lasts for one year or more, time enough to the medium will turn 'solid' (with root growing). If you will use newspaper as lining, don't forget to make some holes in the bottom, to draining water.
