I join Isurus' advice. I would leave the plant alone as it is, and do not disturb it now that much. I have also used same method of ripping off a new growth in order to promote more and it works very good...

Ya, I would just leave it and let it grow. It should be fine. You could start slowly watering now too. Ive looked at those plants at EOoM and have wondered what the flowers would look like. I cant wait to see the blooms on yours!

Presently the same is happening with 3 of my plants; the roots have spread downward already about an inch to reach the medium, and the new growth on each is growing very, very quickly. I agree with leaving it alone for now.

New development: Was just checking the plant and noticed that the old bulb was leaning. When I checked, the base is soft. I'm thinking I need to cut the old bulb above the rot and repot?

Good idea?

You might not need to cut. Are you talking about the bulb with the new growths on it or a shriveled backbulb? I hate to do this, but can you take another pic of the rot?

Time to chop! I would chop of the bulb so that there is absolutely no soft and/or brown stuff left. Then just lay the remaining healty peice on some wet spag and let the new growths grow into it. They will eventually put down roots and grow normally. Do not cover the new roots or the old bulb with spag. Just lay it on top and you should be ok. By chance, have you moved your plant to a new location recently? Is it in a brighter area?

I agree with Steve, time to get out the *sterile* cutting tool...after the slice, dunk the cut end in what you have: powdered rooting stuff (Rootone, etc.), elemental sulfur, or even corn starch - something to dry/seal the cut end. Rootone or sulfur are anti-fungal.
The "wet sphag" creeps me out, but I think sphagnum is satan's medium, so.....
The roots look good, so they will keep growing into whatever you set it on or tie it to. These new growths won't bloom this year, but once they get growing, they will develop quickly into plants that will be ready for next year.
Have fun - Nancy

Can you imagine ol' Lucifer with an orchid patch in the fiery pit? Growing everything unsuccessfully in spag?!?

Sorry, my imagination gets a little crazy sometimes!
