Those are spikes. I personally wouldn't water it until the real new growths start. The spikes do spit roots out on occasion, but they're pretty worthless roots. I find mine don't really penetrate the media, and probably don't transport much water.
You dramatically increase the probability of rot by watering now.

Thank you for the wise words. I have been desperately trying to determine whether to water or not. As you can probably tell by the pic, I did give it a touch of water that day. I will just stop watering now until the new growths appear with 3" roots, correct?

I was lucky enough to see it bloom sevearl years ago. Since then, nothing but growth. I can't wait, they are such pretty flowers, and if I remember correctly it had a cinnamon scent to it. I will keep you all posted on the pics!
