Some catasetinaes
Default Some catasetinaes

I just want to share some pictures I took a few weeks ago in some of my favorite plants. The Cycnoches Maculatum it may not show an outstanding flowers but is considered now an endangered plant. Is relatively hard to find it in this days.

These are spectacular. I'm afraid I'll never get the culture right, all I manage to do is kill them.

Curious, what kind of a strange bug is that in pic #3?

GREAT looking flowers and plants! Do these guys normally bloom this time of year for you? Here in the U.S. we are getting most of our Catasetinae blooms right about now, but isnt it spring where you are? Just curious! Thanks.

Hi Sandy, the bug on Pic 3 is a carpenter bee (Xylocopa sp). These bees (Xylocopini), as well as 'orchid bees' (Euglossini) are natural pollinators of many Catasetum spp.

Steve, the catasetums and cycnoches they bloom at the beggining of the summer season and they will keep going on all the way to the end of the fall. I mean they normally bloom three times during this period if they have a right cultural conditions. Regarding the bug, Ramon is right, is an euglossonae bee and they come just when the flower have that nice scent in the morning. Most of the time I have to keep the plant indoors to avoid the polinators and this way I can keep a long lasting bloom.
