I agree with Steve. They should never really dry out, especially during the growing season. I do cut back during the winter as temp. are lower and they don't dry as quickly. Mine is in a deeper blk. plastic basket...guess a wooden vanda basket would do as well.

Hello -
My gongoras are mostly in the wood slat baskets - they are potted with the p'bulbs high, but the inflorescences either arch over the top or poke through the slats. No sphagnum moss for me (satan!). I use a combination of bark, gravel and a touch of fresh horse manure.
I grow outside, and after a few spring wind storms (violent ones) the foliage of all my gongoras looks like banana trees after a hurricane - shredded!
The flowers are still magic, though.

Nancy-this is one reason I love OB. You get to hear what others are encountering and sometimes wish you were "there" and sometimes you are glad that you are "here where you are". You may not have the same problems but it always alerts you of what could happen and some solutions along the way. Thanks.
