Help needed with cycnoches chlorochilon - repot or divide?
Default Help needed with cycnoches chlorochilon - repot or divide?

This is my second year with this cycnoches. I have no experience with them so I'm looking for input on how to manage this plant. My concern is with how high and precarious the second pseudobulb is perched on the first making them both difficult to support. The second pseudobulb grew and flowered over the last year and new growth is starting to show after what seems like a very brief dormancy. Should I repot them together? Can they be separated? Leave them alone and stake them? Any suggestions on what to do here would be greatly appreciated.

Leave them alone. And you certainly would not divide! A division needs at least 3 pseudobulbs for strength. Those old ones are still very viable. These also don't mind being potbound. If topheavy, just put the whole thing into a larger, heaver pot (like terracotta) for the weight. Next winter you can repot (a little earlier, before new growth starts) but a long way from dividing.

They're not ready for watering yet - the new growth and associated roots need to be around 3 inches or more, with the new growth leaves opening out. But once you do start watering, be sure to keep them moist - during the "rapid growth" phase, Catasetinae are very thirsty (and also want fertilizer... I use time-release like Osmocote or Nutricote to give an extra boost) That will probably be in 6-8 weeks. So for now, just watch. (Put your hands in your pockets when you're tempted to reach for the watering can... not yet!)
