MOG certainly has some interesting ideas about growing orchids...and now I guess she is wading into Catasetums. Yay.

stephen, i never thought you were one for sarcasm!
its a crowded room for orchid youtubers, and we need to get the bots out on reddit to promote other channels. not sure if you guys consume a lot on reddit, but pretty much the only opinion/channel you ever see mentioned there is hers. my sneaking suspicion is that it is the reddit echo chamber (combined with quality video production and a pretty face) that gives her 15k views a day. maybe totally wrong on that and she is the greatest, most knowledgable orchid grower ever. but yeah, ill take the florida factions videos any time over hers.

I am on Reddit pretty often, actually! Dusty'olMan from here on OB got me over there. It seems like the love for MOG has faded quite a bit in the last year, much to the excitement of orchids in collections that will live a bit longer now.

for what it's worth I think that it's important to NOT withhold water to the point of plant desiccation. I have nowhere near the experience of Fred or Stephen and I go by their recommendations 98% of the time to hold off on watering until the roots get some length.
however I have killed a promising young catasetum from underwatering over the winter and I could tell some of my cycnoches this spring were suffering (new growths started to dry some leaves off, despite no real shriveling of the old bulbs). so a little water here and there judiciously, even early on, may be required. the big mature plants can certainly tolerate waiting a long time for water...young plants, perhaps not so much. take home point, watch your plants!

I tried to watch a little but I found it so stupid, and the "logic" shall I say, so mind-numbingly stupid, and the supercilious attitude, so comically stupid, that I got through very little. MOG, MTG, all the same. Oh, and the leaves are way too dark green. they must love the shade.

I started feeling like it was sucking my brain out of my head. I don't think I made it more than 20 secs

Yes, Cynoches and young Catasetums definitely appreciate some water during dormancy! Even some older ones do well with water also. Dry media when the new roots are popping out is the most critical factor, so keeping the bulbs fat enough to push the plant through that period is the key to success.

I actually commented on one of her videos about some of the mistaken ideas she was promoting, suggesting she watch videos by professional growers of whatever she was on about at the time. I never got a response. I tend to ignore her and steer people in other directions.

Probably her worst video yet. She'll probably be breaking out her hydrogen peroxide and doing a full repot mid grow season soon.
