Guess what, the green euloglossine bee which is a pollinator of these species was recently discovered in the South Central Miami area. It's the first time that the species has been found in Coral Gables. Local orchid growers who have these species should keep there eyes open for a chance to see these beautiful and remarkable insects.
I'm so pumped about finding this insect in one of my plants, that I can't express it properly.
I never knew Euglossine Bees weren't found in Miami-Dade County... they have their occasional appearance up in Sarasota County, and show up in swarms either when a Stanhopea is in bloom outside, or my Dendrobium crumenatum is triggered to bloom for the day. It is funny that I've never seen them away from a blooming orchid, which gives rise to the name 'Orchid Bee'
