Not that I'm planning on skipping dormancy. I'm just curious as to what happens if you keep watering when they don't drop their leaves instead of forcing dormancy. Do the pseudobulbs rot or refuse to flower or something?

I'm talking about plants other than what Holst calls "Red Zone" species like pileatum or saccatum, since apparently dormancy is optional for them. Although on that note, has anyone tried keeping such species without dormancy, and if you have, have you noticed any difference in how well they grow?

Used to be, cutting the leaves and cessation of watering. However, many a new hybrid has species in it that naturally eiether don't or scarcely go dormant. My inclination is to water if plant is active.

Good question, and I love that you are familiar with Holst's book! Such a useful reference guide. So the species will go dormant every year, some with shorter dormancy than others (e.g. Red Zone species). What can happen is that the plant will delay dormancy until an awkward time (e.g. the growing season), which messes up the cycle so you might get a reduced growing season, thus negatively affecting the size of the bulbs and the quantity/quality of the blooms. Additionally, if you water when the plant doesn't need it, the risk of rot greatly increases in cold weather (<55 degrees).
