Strange flowers, with an incredibly strong scent that's potent enough to be detected from within 15 feet. The scent reminds me of what it's like to walk into a candy store, where the sickly sweet smell can be overpowering. It's been in flower for over a week, and I have banished it to the side of the house that I only visit when I take the dog out to have his midday walk. I held it close to the dog yesterday for him to admire, and he backed away from it. Of course, he then promptly detected some rabbit droppings nearby. So perhaps his taste is not to be trusted.

Hi, DeaC. I have the plant's photo on another (related) post. Here's that one, which showed the two spikes when they were still small. The leaf is larger now, but other than that, no difference.

Are they also fragrant at night? This group of plants is supposed to be pollinated by Euglossine bees, not moths.

No, I've only noticed fragrance in the early morning hours, between 6 and 11 AM. I guess it might be fragrant before 6 AM, but I'm not around it before that time.

With that strong fragrance, guess it doesn't need color to attract the bees... I also wonder what it looks like to a bee's eyes... wonder if it has a UV component that we can't see but insects can.

And the smell has successfully driven away the five humans I've shown it to. One of them said that it smells like butterscotch candy mixed with formaldehyde, and I think that's actually a very good description. |
