I was about to cut off the spent spikes and noticed that new growths were coming out right under both spikes. Is this common for clowesias? I was about to chop it off!

Totally normal. The new growth is starting. You can clip the spent flower spikes, just do it carefully, not too deep, stay away from those green shoots, Those new growths still have a couple of months to go before they get to the "watering" stage.

Great, thanks! My clowesias are mostly asleep but all other catasetanae are rooting rapidly now.

You know, I've never noticed whether or not the new growths on Clowesia typically come from underneath a spent spike. I'll have to check on my plants tomorrow!

Took a closer look at mine... some new growths pop up where there were old spikes, others pop up randomly. But all still pretty teensy.

A bit late to the party, but those are some fantastic looking blooms! The colors are more punchy that in some other photos I've seen of this hybrid.

I've been keeping an eye out for this very popular hybrid, but no luck so far.
