Cycnoches Richard Brandon (?) seedling first bloom

My Cycnoches seedling just bloomed. I really like the color, but the shape not so much. Do you think it will improve in subsequent blooms?





It is supposed to be Cycnoches Richard Brandon (SVO 9599, Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO II' AM/AOS x Cyc. Richard Brandon 'Xtra Wide Petals'). However, it looks nothing like the parents, or any other Richard Brandon I can find online. Do you think it is in the range of possible variations for this cross? Or that it is mislabeled?

First, your plant has stunning flowers.

Richard Brandon has only 3 species in its ancestry. Genetically it's close to a primary hybrid. I would expect selfing a plant like that, or crossing sibs, to produce wildly variable progeny, with no two alike. In this case it's unfortunate the name gets attached to the (essentially) F1 cross, since most won't look like the original Richard Brandon, Cycnoches warszewiczii × Cycnoches Jean E. Monnier.

Ohhhh, that’s cool! I see what you mean about the twisting of the petals. There’s a good chance that will fix itself somewhat on the next bloom, but I bet there will be at least some twisting on future blooms.

I'll look forward to the bloom next year hoping that the petals and sepals curl less than this year. I may then decide to give it away since I have very limited space and I'm thinking of getting rid of a few plants I am less happy with to make place for new ones; but sorry tmoney I won't ship to Europe...

That is... absolutely breathtaking! Whew, wow. If it should happen to need a new home, it would be my honor and privilege to welcome that presence into mine. Just sayin'. I'll look for one of my own, but from the sound of it, that'll be a bit of a unicorn... Wow.
