Ctsm. New Roots - Repot Suggestions?

I wanted to PET this but am worried about the new roots that have exploded...got away from me. Some old roots are also activating and growing new tips on the bottom of the root mass. I don’t want to damage anything but this plant would seem to be in desperate need of a repot, PET or otherwise. Suggestions?

Ah, yes, now is the optimal time to repot. Try to put it in fairly dry media, so the roots are encouraged to grow. From what I've read, if you have a water source away from the media, under the pot, the humidity gradient will stimulate root growth downwards.

And then make sure you don't actually start watering until the new growth is fairly large -- or the mother bulb is fairly wrinkled.

An aside: would this qualify as a "keiki"? or is the term reserved for only a few genera of orchids?

No, this is just a new growth. I'd say a keiki is a term for a new growth that is designed to become a whole new plant (clone) and is not supposed to be a continuation of the current plant (new growth). FYI- I am totally making this up based on my experiences over the years and cannot point to an authoritative source for this info.

But isn't the new ctsm growth an exact clone of the parent? The new growth similarly comes out of dormant "eyes" like in dendrobiums....

Thanks, all! Yeah, my worry was damaging the roots...I’ll gingerly pack the new sphag around them.

@ isarus - don’t trim the old roots you say? Ok...I’ll leave them. Would it still be ok to go PET without trimming them down?
