But this was not what i was excited for...after all the spikes lost to lizards i finally got one to mature (damn monsoon i think kept it to one flower) and its a female

On the bright side, not all was lost and you got a flower from them! Maybe it’ll be prone to throwing females and you can cross it next year.

I got more females than usual this year, and I know other people who have, as well. While Fred Clarke knows of no way to definitely produce either males or females, he has noted that the incidence of females is higher when conditions are optimal... of course that will be different for every plant at any point in time. So maybe mine will get a little less fertilizer next year. Or maybe weather/etc won't as perfect next year. But these do what they want And I have has some do a second spike with the opposite gender in the same season... hope is not gone yet. (Female flowers are pretty boring since they all look pretty much alike... Even those that have a bit of extra color aren't different enough to tell one from another.)

Any Catasetum plant can produce males, females, or both in the same season. So it's luck of the draw. Give them not enough of what they want, you may well get nothing. Maybe be a little too nice, and end up with females. You just need to have lots of plants, so that you raise your odds of getting what you want.

And maybe toss into the mix some of the Catasetinae that aren't dimorphic (like Clowesia and Mormodes) or less extremely dimorphic like Cycnoches. (Combinations of these with Catasetums tend to be consistent...)

i am stoked that i got a dent in the curly tails population enough to have spikes...i have three others in spike now but i don't dare to count before they hatch....the others have more than one bud too, which is nice

you caught me, Roberta.....I am too good at growing Ctsm.

i have no complaints i was just surprised and it was not what i expected...disappointed is unfair and inaccurate.
