With all the hazards, maybe surround individual plants with hardware cloth tubes? Put them in a cage...Feeding the wildlife is SO disappointing!

yeah, i was shocked to get two more after the first two were gobbled...i was really fit to be tied LOL

Roberta, I agree, the problem is that these grow all sideways and weird and the cages would be huge and annoying.

i am thinning their numbers at least

Remember this guy?

It lives!!! And it is time to start watering, I'd say.

But I just realized the problem with potting it in a slot pot. The roots are going to come streaming out the slots. They're already started. How to I keep this from turning into a total mess? Worse yet, break off all the external roots? Thanks as always.

I would be inclined to gently place the pot into a larger pot (solid plastic, no slits) surrounded by enough spaghnum to be sure of cushioning those roots that have already escaped. Any attempt to extricate the plant (like by cutting the pot around them) is likely to break some or most of them... those growing root tips are very, very fragile. Growing Catasetinae love moisture, so having it in a pot that just has normal drain holes, not the slits, won't hurt anything and may be beneficial. Next year you can do the pot-cutting before growth starts while it's dormant (and you don't have to be so concerned with damaging what will then be year-old roots) and consolidate into one pot. Right now, go with the flow.
