Pot for Houlettia odoratissima Male
Default Pot for Houlettia odoratissima

I recently got one of these bare-root from Ecuagenera. It is just beginning new growths so I should have new roots soon.

It's a terrestrial... but the inflorescences hang down? What kind of pot should I use? I could grow it in S/H with a standard 1 quart/liter container. I could put it into something like a Cymbidium potting mix.

you could pot it however you wish and then just boost it on a pedestal for bloom time?

i have no experience with this plant but i know you are very successful with the SH so i would start there

maybe get a taller container than you usually use (8" vase or votive cylinder from dollar tree are my favs) and then there will be more room for hanging down?

if you want to go really tall use a plastic toilet paper roll holder

I would like to find out what it means for it to have spikes that hang down. Does it grow on cliffs or steep hills? Do they sprawl on the ground so ants and beetles can get to them?

Online - I came across this here:

The cym mix sounds workable for regular potting.

Thank you for taking the time! But you got tricked.

Fandom is a site that scrapes information from other sites without permission - most people recognize this is stealing. The information there is of unknown accuracy. For example, entries for Houlettia odoratissima:

This is why I come to Orchid Board for information. Wikipedia and most other sites on the Internet are not accurate. Real information from real growers is important.

This species has erect spikes! No need to worry about spikes growing downward.

I tried this one (also from Ecuagenera) in my conditions and it was too hot. Mine died. However, I had it in my usual terrestrial mix of 50-50 peat-sand.

Thanks ES!

I assume that a cym mix should get the job done for this one. If I purchased one of these, I'd probably grow it like a spathoglottis - even though it isn't a spathoglottis.

This link could be useful : Click Here

It suggests that there are choices for media. As long as it works, and works nicely for the grower, then that's the main thing.

I grow almost all the orchids in an evaporatively cooled sunroom. It's rarely over 80 F / 25C in there.

Eulophia petersii was undamaged outside under a slatted patio cover here at 122 F / 50C years ago. Den speciosum and kingianum alba, and Ansellia africana are still outside; it's been 115 F / 46C. They are slightly unhappy. The Ansellia is pushing new growth. I brought in the Cym seedlings when they became somewhat unhappy at 110 F / 43 C. I suspect mature plants could take it.
