I did not notice that, so thanks for the tip. I might have to hit up Hausermann again (for the second time in the last week hahahaha). Brent has one division of Stanhopea nigroviolacea ‘Predator’ FCC/AOS, which is the one I really want, but it may be sold. I don't think the sale is final yet, and he says that if his other buyer falls through, it's mine, so I'm hoping for that. If that doesn't work out, I will probably grab a couple from Hausermann. Again, thanks for the tip.

That's the one I have - I mentioned it in the Stanhopea repotting thread. I'm trying to get it to make a nice plant from near-rootless back bulbs.

I found another at a nursery I've never ordered from before. It's more expensive, but it looks very nice. I've ordered from Brent before, and I know I can trust him to sell me a quality plant, so I'd rather order from him, but I don't want to wait too long, because somebody else might scoop that other one if Brent sells his first. I emailed him, and he said he should know by tomorrow, so that should give me enough time to grab that other one if Brent sells his. I'm really impressed with how accommodating and helpful he is being with me on this. Seems like a real stand up guy.

And does anybody know about Orchid Design in San Jose, CA? That's who has the other tigrina I'm looking at. They don't have many yelp reviews, but they are mostly good. There is one bad review, but I think the guy was confused or misinformed. I used to run a seasonal garden center, and sometimes the plants come in with the wholesale price on the price tag, and if you forget to take that tag off, sometimes customers get confused, and then mad when you can't sell them the plant for the price on the sticker, which is what we paid for it, not what we are selling it for. In the bad review, it sounds like that is probably what happened. He blamed the price change on the owners jacking up the price to take advantage of Chinese new year, but come on, who does that? It's a minor holiday, so I double the price of my plants? I don't find that likely.

But anyway, anybody have any experience with this nursery?

I only know about Orchid Design from shows, but they do have quality plants. (By the way, Chinese New Year is not a minor holiday where I live, it is a very big event in the Vietnamese community especially. Which means a significant chunk of Orange County, CA. Festivities occur over a week or more. )

My bad about referring to Chinese New Year as a minor holiday. That was insensitive. But I've never lived anywhere where it was a big deal, so I didn't know. But I still stand by my statement that I find it unlikely that somebody doubled the price of their plants to take advantage of a holiday.

No worries there... Actually, doubt she doubled the price but would not be surprised if it was higher... pre-Christmas vs week after...Just capitalism. Not likely to be an issue if you buy from her at any rate. But hope you get the one that you already have your eye on!

I did not get the one I had my eye on, but I'm not too disappointed. There appears to be only two of that plant for sale in the entire country haha, and I got the other one. It was bigger, so it was more expensive, but it has 5 flower spikes just starting, so maybe getting the one from Orchid Design was the better choice anyway. You guys say that you've seen them at shows and they have good plants, so I feel comfortable ordering from them. There's a couple other things I've got my eye on at Rogue Orchids, so he'll end up getting my money just the same lol

Stan. tigrina var. nigroviolacea 'Predator' is well-traveled. I had the privilege of seeing the plant the night that it was awarded - given the ephemeral nature of Stanhopea flowers, to have it in prime condition on judging night was pretty special. (I can still visualize it on a large stand, in all its glory... and that was 1996, very early in my orchid-growing "career". Pacific South judging center, same night and location as South Coast Orchid Society) I guess after that it got broken up and pieces went in various directions, it's vigorous and the pieces propagated well, I'm sure.

The grower I got it from said that it is an actual division form the original awarded plant. I don't know if that's true, but I have no reason to doubt that it's true. And for the price I paid, it seems like it makes sense haha

Yes, I think I did. I actually woke up at like 4 this morning thinking about it. The one from Rogue looked great, but the other one from Orchid Design almost seemed better (bigger, at least), plus the flower spikes. I felt bad that I made Brent take all that time to email me about the plant and then I decided to buy a different one instead, but I've bought from him before, and I'll buy from him again. He'll still get my money haha. But I was in bed thinking, "What if Brent sells his, and then I go to the other website, and that one is gone too? I'm going to be so disappointed!" so I went ahead and ordered the one from Orchid Design at like 4 this morning and sent a nice email to Brent telling thank you, but I decided to go with the other plant, just to be safe. I wanted to make sure I get one, since there seemed to be only two of them for sale in the entire country. i haven't heard back from Brent, but I'm sure he's not mad, just busy. In one of his emails, he even said that he would totally understand if I bought the other one instead of his. But I feel good about the decision i made.
