I have a blooming size Thai Spider and a small Frostii. They are currently both inside under lights. My question is can I put them outside this summer with my other heat loving orchids? I live in Eastern VA where it gets very hot and humid in the summer. I put most of my plants on my screened in porch where it is light but no direct sunlight. Any hint would be appreciated.
Yes, these would love being outside. They will definitely benefit from the buoyant summer breeze and humidity you have. If you can put them in a spot where they will get rained on, even better. Just make sure they get enough light. What other orchids do you grow and bloom in the area you want to put these?
I have cattleya, oncidiums and dendrobiums that I put outside under a tree. The oncidiums are in a spot where they get morning sun. The catts and dens are in a shady spot. Lots of light, but no direct sun. Phals and Paphs stay on the porch.
I had a very hard time blooming my bulbos under phal light. I grow the majority of mine with my Dendrobiums, many of them do get a bit of direct sun so don’t worry about that (especially if it’s early morning light), and they grow and bloom great. So if you are blooming your Dens and Oncodiums, I would say either of those two spots would be good lighting. Just make sure they stay hydrated
